It is designed for travelers who want challenge, scenery, history, and comfort in one Great Wall adventure.
Conquer the Wild Beauty of Jiankou Great Wall
Hike one of the most dramatic wild Great Wall sections near Beijing. The Jiankou section is famous for steep ridges, broken watchtowers, and untouched scenery. With your guide, you’ll follow a safer selected route while still experiencing the raw adventure of the Wall.
Walk Through the Historic Gubeikou Great Wall
Explore Gubeikou Great Wall, a quiet and strategically important section once used to protect the northern gateway to Beijing. Unlike crowded tourist sections, Gubeikou offers original bricks, ancient watchtowers, open mountain views, and a rare feeling of walking through history.
Capture the Best Great Wall Photos at Jinshanling
The Great Wall at Jinshanling is one of the most photogenic sections in China, combining restored wall, wild ruins, rolling mountains, and elegant watchtowers. It offers stunning photo opportunities from sunrise light to wide panoramic views.
Hike Toward Simatai West for Classic Great Wall Views
Enjoy a scenic hike from Jinshanling to Simatai West, where the wall rises and falls across the mountains like a dragon. This route is less crowded, visually rich, and ideal for travelers who want a real Great Wall hiking experience, not just a quick visit.
Stay Overnight Near Beautiful Gubei Water Town
After a full day of hiking, relax near Gubei Water Town. Enjoy local restaurants, peaceful evening views, optional hot spring time, and the illuminated Great Wall above the town — a perfect balance of adventure and comfort.

Your 3-Day Great Wall Hiking Journey
This suggested itinerary is designed for travelers who want a wonderful Great Wall hiking experience beyond ordinary sightseeing. In three days, you will hike progressively from the wild wall at Jiankou to the historic Gubeikou Great Wall, then continue to the Great Wall at Jinshanling and Simatai West. It combines challenge, history, breathtaking views, restored wall scenery, and quiet rural landscapes.
Day 1 – Beijing – Jiankou Great Wall – Mutianyu – Gubei Water Town
Conquer the Majestic Section of the Great Wall at Jiankou
Hiking Distance: approx. 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: approx. 5 hours
Highlights: Jiankou section, wild section, restored Great Wall section, Mutianyu, Gubei Water Town
Your private guide will meet you in your hotel lobby in Beijing at around 8:00 am. You will travel by quality vehicle with a professional driver to Xizhazi Village, located at the foot of the Jiankou Great Wall.
The hike begins with a climb to the Wall, followed by a dramatic walk along the Jiankou section, one of the most challenging and majestic sections of the Great Wall. This wild section is famous for steep ridges, broken stairs, ancient bricks, and unrestored watchtowers. It is not a polished tourist route, but that is exactly what makes the wild beauty so memorable.
You will then hike east toward Mutianyu, where the landscape changes from wild wall ruins to a restored wall. This sharp contrast helps you understand how different each section of the Great Wall can feel. The Mutianyu area also gives you a chance to enjoy a safer and more open restored Great Wall section after the adventurous Jiankou hike.
After descending from the Wall, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant near Mutianyu. Later, transfer to beautiful Gubei Water Town for your overnight stay. In the evening, you may relax at your hotel room, enjoy a hot spring, take a leisurely boat ride, or admire the stunning night views of the town and the Great Wall above.
Included today: lunch, dinner accommodation, private transfers
Optional: hot spring, boat ride, night photography
Day 2 – Gubeikou Great Wall – Jinshanling Great Wall – Gubei Water Town
Hike the Historic Gubeikou Jinshanling Route
Hiking Distance: approx. 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: approx. 5 hours
Highlights: Gubeikou Great Wall, Jinshanling Great Wall, nearby military area, rural paths, watchtowers
After breakfast, start your second day at the Gubeikou Great Wall, one of the most historically important sections north of Beijing. Gubeikou Great Wall occupies a strategically important location and once protected the northern gateway to the capital against outer enemies. It also has many old watchtowers, beacon towers, and many other military constructions.
Compared with Jiankou, today’s hike is longer but more relaxed. The scenery is less dramatic at first, but it gives you a sweeping sense of what the Great Wall looked like before modern restoration. This part is also especially interesting historically, with original bricks, quiet ruins, and almost no crowds.
After about two hours on the Wall, your guide will lead you down to avoid a nearby military area. You will continue through farmland, forest trails, and the second valley before reconnecting with the Wall near the Jinshanling Great Wall. This detour makes the day more varied and authentic, combining Wall hiking with rural northern China scenery.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant near Jinshanling. After the hike, return to beautiful Gubei Water Town for another relaxing night. This balance of adventure and comfort is what makes this private tour more enjoyable than many other standard Great Wall hiking tour options.
Included today: breakfast, lunch, two dinners arrangement depending on final package, hotel stay
Travel note: Carry toilet paper for rural sections and simple restrooms.
Day 3 – Jinshanling Great Wall – Simatai West – Beijing
Capture the Most Picturesque Great Wall Hike
Hiking Distance: approx. 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: approx. 3.5 hours
Highlights: Great Wall at Jinshanling, Simatai West, restored section, wild ruins, professional Great Wall photos
After breakfast, take a short drive to the Great Wall at Jinshanling, widely known as one of the best places for picturesque Great Wall hikes. This final day is designed for scenery, photography, and a rewarding finish to your 3 day Jiankou to Jinshanling Great Wall hiking discovery tour.
The hike from Jinshanling to Simatai West offers some of the most beautiful views of the Great Wall of China. The Wall rises and falls across mountain ridges, with restored towers, original ruins, and dramatic curves that create exotic Great Wall scenery in every direction.
This section is half restored and half wild, so you can see both a repaired restored section and ancient unrepaired watchtowers in one hike. It also offers stunning photo opportunities, especially in the morning light. Many professional Great Wall photos are taken here because the landscape is wide, layered, and visually powerful.
You will finish near the junction of the Jinshanling and Simatai sections. After lunch at the foot of Jinshanling, your guide and driver will take you back to Beijing, with drop off at your hotel or Beijing Capital International Airport if needed.
By the end of this journey, you will have experienced the Great Wall in three different ways: the wild challenge of Jiankou, the historic depth of Gubeikou, and the breathtaking views of Jinshanling and Simatai West.
Included today: breakfast, lunch, private transfer back to Beijing
Best for: photography, scenery, final Great Wall memories

Great Wall Hiking Questions Travelers Ask Most
Before booking this 3-day Great Wall hiking tour, many travelers want to know about difficulty, safety, camping conditions, route flexibility, and what to bring. Here are the key answers to help you choose with confidence.
How difficult is this Great Wall hike?
This tour is moderate to strenuous. The Jiankou Great Wall is the most challenging part, with steep climbs, loose stones, and narrow paths. The Gubeikou Jinshanling route is longer but more relaxed, while Jinshanling to Simatai West is scenic and rewarding. Good physical condition is recommended, but the pace can be adjusted during this private tour.
Is Jiankou Great Wall safe for hiking?
Jiankou is a wild and unrestored section, so it should not be treated like a normal sightseeing area. Your guide will choose safer trails, avoid risky areas, and adjust the route according to weather and fitness level. Sturdy hiking shoes are strongly recommended for this wild wall section.
How far do we hike each day?
The suggested route covers about 26 km / 16 miles in total. Day 1 is about 10 km from Jiankou to Mutianyu, Day 2 is about 10 km from Gubeikou Great Wall toward Jinshanling Great Wall, and Day 3 is about 6 km from Jinshanling Great Wall to Simatai West.
Can we choose hotel stay or Great Wall camping?
Yes. Most travelers prefer a comfortable hotel near beautiful Gubei Water Town, with dinner accommodation, hot spring options, and stunning night views. For adventurous travelers, a camping-style experience may be arranged where conditions allow. Please note that Great Wall camping conditions are simple and rugged. Camping gears, necessary camping gears, and sleeping bags need to be prepared in advance, and guaranteed camping depends on local rules, weather, and site conditions.
What should I bring for this hiking tour?
Bring sturdy hiking shoes, comfortable outdoor clothes, sunscreen, a small backpack, water bottle, personal medicine, and a camera. It is also useful to carry toilet paper, especially on rural routes near Gubeikou and Jinshanling. If camping is selected, camping facilities are basic, so sleeping bags and suitable personal items are important.
Why choose this tour instead of a normal Great Wall day trip?
A normal day trip usually shows only one restored wall section. This route gives you a much deeper experience: Jiankou Great Wall for wild beauty, Gubeikou Great Wall for military history, and the Great Wall at Jinshanling for breathtaking views and stunning photo opportunities. With personal transfers, a professional guide, a quality vehicle, and flexible pacing, this is a more complete and memorable Great Wall hiking tour.
