Why This Lhasa Journey Stands Out

Carefully selected moments that reveal Lhasa’s culture, spirituality, and landscapes—beyond standard sightseeing.

Uncover the Stories Behind the Potala Palace

Step inside the legendary Potala Palace, the most iconic symbol of Tibet, and explore its sacred halls, chapels, and centuries-old Buddhist art with your Tibetan guide.
Beyond the grand architecture, learn the lesser-known stories of how this palace was built at high altitude—and enjoy carefully chosen viewpoints that reveal the palace from quieter, less touristy angles.

Witness Monks’ Debates and Hidden Thangka Views at Sera Monastery

Visit Sera Monastery at the right time to observe the lively debates of Tibetan monks—an essential part of Tibetan Buddhist education rarely seen elsewhere.
Afterward, walk up the hillside behind the monastery, where large rock thangkas and panoramic monastery views await, an area often missed by most tourists.

Walk the Pilgrimage Circuit at Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street

Experience the spiritual heartbeat of Lhasa as you visit Jokhang Temple and follow devoted pilgrims along Barkhor Street, the city’s oldest pilgrimage route.
Along the way, explore traditional Tibetan architecture, browse local markets, and pause for a cup of Tibetan sweet tea at a quiet nunnery—offering a glimpse into everyday life beyond the crowds.

Step Onto the Blue Ice of a Hidden Plateau Lake (Winter Experience)

In winter, take a short hike to a hidden alpine lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains and glaciers.
When conditions allow, step onto the natural blue ice, relax in the sunshine, and enjoy one of Lhasa’s most unique seasonal landscapes—an experience only possible during the colder months.

Moments Along the Way

Quiet scenes and authentic moments captured during the journey — from sacred streets and mountain views to everyday life in Lhasa beyond the usual sightseeing routes.

Your 5-Day Journey Through the Heart of Lhasa

This 5-day itinerary is thoughtfully designed to balance iconic landmarks, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and high-altitude comfort.
The pace is gradual and flexible, and the journey can be customized to match your interests, travel style, and physical condition.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Lhasa (3,650 m) | Acclimatization & Rest

Upon arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport or the railway station, your private Tibetan guide and driver will greet you and escort you to your hotel in a comfortable, non-smoking vehicle.

You will check in at the Shangri-La Hotel Lhasa, where the remainder of the day is reserved for rest and altitude acclimatization. Your guide will share practical tips to help you adapt smoothly to the high altitude and enjoy the days ahead.

Begin your exploration at Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas, now a peaceful park where local Tibetans gather. The gardens provide a relaxing introduction to sightseeing at high altitude.

Continue to Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world and an important center of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. Learn about monastic life and the religious traditions that shaped Tibet’s history.

In the afternoon, visit Sera Monastery and observe the famous monks’ debate session (except Sundays), a lively and fascinating part of Tibetan Buddhist education.

This morning, explore the iconic Potala Palace, Tibet’s most important landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover sacred halls, ancient murals, statues, and relics while learning how this “first palace” was built on the Red Hill at high altitude.

In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed walking tour through the old city, including Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Lhasa, and Barkhor Street, where devoted pilgrims circle the temple alongside daily local life.

Conclude the walk with a quiet visit to a nunnery, where you can chat with the nuns and enjoy a cup of traditional Tibetan sweet tea.

Depart Lhasa for a scenic drive across the Tibetan plateau to Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the lake’s turquoise waters create one of the most beautiful landscapes in Tibet.

Continue toward Karola Mountain, where a short hike leads to a hidden alpine lake. In winter, the lake freezes into striking blue ice, allowing you to sit or lie on the ice under clear skies—an experience unique to this season. A glacier-covered slope rises on the opposite side of the lake.

Return to Lhasa in the late afternoon.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport or train station for departure. Assistance with luggage and check-in is provided, bringing your 5-day Lhasa highlights tour to a smooth and comfortable conclusion.
